The best plants for winter garden colour. Share the story. ; Also known as chaenomeles, this is a hardy woody shrub. It possesses thorny branches that bear cup-shaped flowers in winter aswell as early spring. There are a huge range of viburnum plants for winter colour. Plants also have heat hardiness, some woody plants such as lilacs or perennials such as delphiniums not surviving well in the heat of the south. There is even a map now of heat hardiness zones, but information on heat hardiness of specific plants is not as developed as the cold hardiness ratings.
Generally speaking a hardy perennial will last three or more seasons even with a freeze over the winter. Depending on the zone you live in, hardy perennials will take varying degrees of sun. I live in zone 7b (North Carolina) and my mother, who was also an 5/5(1). Some perennials, however, can develop woody stems over the course of a growing season. Russian sage plants and most types of lavender develop woody stems during a growing season. In cold regions with freezing winters, these stems die back over winter. In spring, these perennials must be pruned to a shorter height of 6 to 12 inches.
